IEEE مخفف عبارت The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers به معنای موسسه مهندسان برق و الکترونیک می باشد . این موسسه پس از جنگ جهانی دوم و در سال 1963 تشکیل شد . این موسسه از موسسات مهم استانداردسازی در دنیاست. استانداردسازی این موسسه طیف وسیعی از موضوعات را در بر می گیرد از جمله: مهندسی پزشکی، فناوری اطلاعات، مخابرات، حمل و نقل، نانوفناوری و … . به عنوان مثال یکی از استانداردهای مهم این موسسه IEEE 802.11 است که مربوط به ارتباطات بی سیم است که در لپ تاپ ها نیز به کار می رود.
